I find it hard to change Beyond routine With its iron back And its cheap caffeine But we go too far Down this road we’ve turned We will cry for the city We will beg for its crime We will see what we’re missing We will beg and we will cry I’ve struggled hard to be What my Daddy wants What my Sister feels What my Girlfriend needs But we go too far Down this road we’ve turned We will cry for the city We will reap what we sow We will find we’ve sowed so little But we will reap and we will sow I’m haunted by a dream A future scene With an absent heart And an open seam I’ve got no heart left to break It’s my saving grace My road to ruin My oldest friend But we go too far Down this road we’ve turned We will cry for the city We will read of its past We will fail to listen We will read and we’ll ignore We will cry for the city We will search for its hope And from the concrete Revolution springs its head Towards the sun
2.
Tie me up on the floor Take all my money and retreat to air You would think that I’d care But I’m not concerned at all Don’t despair just yet Plan for the worst but hope for the best It’s a tedious test That only time will tell So say your last goodbyes Place the good things in history and bad in the past You would think it would last But I’m not convinced at all Feast your eyes on the future Steer well clear of blame culture Keep your feet on the ground And you’ll be fine For quite some time Hold your head in your hands Don’t fear for inertia or the friends that might hurt you Don’t be scared 48
3.
Cover over everything Paper over cracks until it’s fine Fine at least for now Try your best to disappear Convince yourself that we can see See quite far enough As the poles retreat we face defeat head on Kill the light parade the last exploding bomb Feel the Fahrenheit, the last daylight The constitution failed to be, something Confident yet paralysed Terrify the president elect Elected by a thief Take a vow of honesty Promise to eliminate the poor But the poor are voiceless here As the poles retreat we face defeat head on Kill the light parade the last exploding bomb Feel the Fahrenheit, the last daylight The constitution failed to be, something More than I could hope to be Drowning helpless in the sea Carried by a rising tide Need to remedy this life

London Road 03:42
(lyrics by Neil McSweeney) Sitting in the park passing time Watching stars with a bottle of wine You notice something in my smile So we head off into town Just in time for kicking out Call a friend but there's no reply They're never about, but it was worth a try And we go rolling down the London Road Though we know it's not the best way home Sitting on a corner staring at our shoes Sick to my guts for the love of you The garage up ahead closed down But the petrol smell still hangs around And you don't like it like I do We're singing about the hip lap drive And I can't dance to save my life But I've never felt more like I wanted to Still something tells me not to As we go rolling down the London Road Though we know it's not the best way home And sit on a corner staring at our shoes You never shut up I never make my move
5.
The Waltz 03:25
To the east we have our lowest land Taken from the sea But soon it will be taken back As the black water comes creeping back To the west we have triumphant hills And lakes that dress the scars But soon it will be taken back As the black water shatters and cracks So we look to the stars In their infinite sky As science and faith collide into the night We’re in the firing line again To the south we have our richest land But Christ you have to pay But soon there’ll be nowhere to stay As the black water retreats away To the north Monroes scatter the land They lead the rain astray But the rain will take its share away And where black water was earth remains So we look to the past To some difficult time As science and faith collide into the night We’re in the firing line again So herein lies some sound advice Much older than its years Move to the north and ride your luck Cos elsewhere you will be f***** So we look to our god To some promising heir As science and faith collide into the night We’re in the firing line again As science and faith collide We’ll fight right back Until the firing line has changed

Fall into a taxi cab Take me home I’ve had enough You will find me sleeping On the couch tonight it’ll be my bed Borrow words to spread the blame Compliments they’re just the same Worry for the hearts you’ll break I’m sure this won’t be my last daft mistake So I cling to you Like sweet lovers do So that when the darkness consumes us There’ll be nothing left for you Mind the gap it grows each day Take good care or I know you’ll pay Consequence is staring Back at me it’s all I ever see So I cling to you Like sweet lovers do So that when the darkness consumes us There’ll be nothing left for you Turn the light off come to bed Make spoons think of love instead Promise things I can’t control Weighed down by the thought of getting old
7.
Powerfull Pill Cruelty overwhelming At the turning of the year Hoping that the tide will turn And luck falls somewhere near Separately dreaming That some things will be fair Sleeping in the open air in the shadow of the stairs And these roads we take as we come back home Are the same roads we take all the year And the love we made on those Saturdays Is the same love now filled with tears Saying that you’re lonely Is that hardest thing to do Denying it’s significant is the easiest thing to choose We’re filling all the gaps in We’re dosing up on gin But this medicine’s a mile away from resuscitating me And these friends we made to our sorry song Are the same friends that offer us cheer And the hope that stretched to those better days Is the same hope now tinged with fear But you mustn’t give up Cos I need you now You mustn’t give up I don’t want you to know Mustn’t give up ‘till we know for sure You say you love me We’re drinking all the coffee Forgetting all the week Friday night’s a keepsake But then Sunday’s fucking bleak And these bonds we made with our history Are the same bonds that bind us still And the kindness shown with it sympathy Is the same kindness as a powerful pill But you mustn’t give up Cos I need you now You mustn’t give up I don’t want you to know Mustn’t give up ‘till we know for sure You say you love me But I still don’t know
8.
I call, call, call for a cab Cos I’m late, late, late and I’m meeting with you You, you and your lover it’s true True, but it has to be done I’m calm, calm cos I know that I have to be Dead calm else I know I’ll be weak Weak, weak like the boy that I really am Weak, weak when you need me the most Oh Sonny, Sonny don’t leave I’m caught between seasons snow up to my knees and Oh Sonny, Sonny don’t go I’m going to wait for the cuckoo’s call I’m scared, scared, scared for my conscience that’s bare Bare, like a thread less a needle I’m cheap, cheap, cheap and invisible Hurt, hurt when I know that you’re right I’m bold, bold, bold without question I’ve sold out to who hurt me the most Please don’t look to the past now I’ve changed Now, I won’t let you down Oh Sonny, Sonny don’t leave I’m caught between seasons snow up to my knees and Oh Sonny, Sonny don’t go I’m going to wait for the cuckoo’s call Lord, give me the wings to fly, the weapons to fight for this Lord, give me the time to try, the time to change for you Here, blind, now that you’re calling Oh Sonny, Sonny don’t leave I’m caught between seasons snow up to my knees and Oh Sonny, Sonny don’t go I’m going to wait for the cuckoo and Oh Sonny, Sonny don’t leave I’m caught between seasons snow up to my knees and Oh Sonny, Sonny don’t go I’m going to wait for the cuckoo I’m going to wait for the cuckoo to call
9.
This conversation’s run its course Now the air is as dry as a bone But you sit there all smug up high on your throne While my temper is red and I’m wilfully missing Well the sun sure is hot but it deepens the shadows I fear for my kin and the seed of the summer These weapons we use and the words that run through It’s worth next to nothing but it means the world to me I’ll make my excuse and leave It’s just a stitch in time At least that’s what I tell myself I tell too many lies Well the sun sure is hot but it deepens the shadows I fear for my kin and the seed of the summer These weapons we use and the words that run through It’s worth next to nothing but it means the world to me Don’t dwell on the promises we make My energy has waned and my focus has shifted At an age with far more grace Now I send you my love with all faith And no sincerity Well the sun sure is hot but it deepens the shadows I fear for my kin and the seed of the summer These weapons we use and the words that run through It’s worth next to nothing but it means the world to me
10.
I Am Clay 03:18
So we laid to rest our weary heads A battle fought, an old book read An answer for an answer Simple pleasures lonelily So we carved our names with flint and stone A memory of the broken bone That shattered all our hopes of swimming out to sea Will you find me an answer You could beat it into me Find me an answer You could kick me in the teeth Find me an answer for the shadow over me Will you find me an answer for the sea So we turned and ran part of the plan It’s a fickle way of testing out The way that moonlight sleeps among the stars over me So we unfurled a flag of fortune it’s a tested cure for being bored On a hillside, in the snow, while you leaned on me Will you find me an answer You could beat it into me Find me an answer You could kick me in the teeth Find me an answer for the shadow over me Will you find me an answer for the sea When you call I don’t want to hear you say What you’ll find is that I am Clay When the sunshine fell deep in the well We wished we’d had something to sell We’d ebay every last thing Hell my heart if I had two So we substituted comfort for what we thought was right Until we got a fright on a Friday when we missed TV Will you find me an answer You could beat it into me Find me an answer You could kick me in the teeth Find me an answer for the shadow over me Will you find me an answer for the sea
11.
I would never call aloud your name Cos that path leads nowhere Black cats cross my path Each day at last sleeptalking over Weigh me down with wings of steel that slow My journey to her Flying down the avenue with gravity right on our sides when I’m weaker than you think With dancing bears and Fred Astaire Be grateful I’ve a soul to bear I’m broken, blind and inside out I’m shattered to my bones with spite I’m cold and lonely And I’m weak And I long to hold you now It’s here Does this mean nothing to you Baby, sweet baby, sweet baby wake

about

This album is the follow up to the Vast Atlantic EP; think of it as Vast Atlantic's big sister. Two of these songs, Cry For The City and Constitution Failed, have featured in Waterloo Road on BBC1. Since we released Vast Atlantic Rhys Kelly has joined the band, taking over on the keys and adding clarinet to some of the songs.
