Hunger 04:35
Winter tells an ancient story, gathered in the firelight Celebrate the passing solstice, warmth back in the sun Season wood beside the cabin, evenings rich with parables Hands are fast with bands of linen, spring time has begun They will sacrifice the trees Forcing nature to its knees Full stomachs all round for now Oh hunger, I fear you Summer shows its hand of riches, fields are filled with buttercups Tempered tales of new religions, faith is on the run Borrowed light of waning mornings, sunlight warmth diminishing Autumn leaves are shed with each gust, return their life to earth They will sacrifice the trees Forcing nature to its knees Full stomachs all round for now Oh hunger, I fear you On this hard fought land, with your helping hand We will suffer your demands, we won’t move Ancient rivers run dry beneath these swollen skies While they scatter out traditions neatly into lines Before our ancestors’ eyes began this invisible demise That unravelled all our ties to our past We’re determined to outlast this fleeting fashion that has cast Doubt on the methods that we’ve mastered caring for the land Oh hunger I fear you

There’s a bright moon rising and it’s spreading over town All kinds of crazy sh!t is gonna go down I’m banning all your troubles and outlawing misery Anyone who makes you frown will have to step through me So come on out tonight if you want to make it alright with me So come on out tonight if you want to feel how I feel Tell PC McGarry to get himself a mate Arm themselves with CS gas they’re gonna be out late I’m climbing up the buildings and I’m throwing round the cars Taller than the warehouse tower by far So come on out tonight if you want to make it alright with me So come on out tonight if you want to feel how I feel Eyes so bright and a soul so dim I jumped into the ocean where I no longer can swim Rats in the bathtub and lies in the sink I’m taking small steps, I’m on the brink And I like you a lot but I don’t like him Don’t like the way you keep looking at him Oh this city is my city, it’ll never be his These bars are my bars and it’s Friday night again I’ve got springs in my toes girl and springs in my heels Take hold of my fingers and tell me how it feels It’s curry smells, wet cobblestones and neon lights tonight Horizons big as continents and eyes so bright So come on out tonight if you want to make it alright with me So come on out tonight if you want to feel how I feel

Carson 02:49
Born in Spring of 1907 underneath a Pittsburg sky Carson commandeered a library cos the books were running dry She consumed books on the ocean, she absorbed the natural world On the banks of Allegheny grew a bright spark of a girl Unsinkable sailor at the edge of the sea We’re indebted to this pioneer who took on the industry With a belly full of heptachlor, dieldrin in the veins Corporations seem like gods sometimes but it’s us who hold the reins In Parnassus Pennsylvania summer 1925 Graduating at the top of class, a class of forty five On she went to read at Johns Hopkins, majored in biology She began her lonely voyage, sailing on the devil’s sea Unsinkable sailor at the edge of the sea We’re indebted to this pioneer who took on the industry With a belly full of heptachlor, dieldrin in the veins Corporations seem like gods sometimes but it’s us who hold the reins In the silent spring of 1962, beneath a barren sky Where once birdsong filled the ether, now we’re deafened by the lies Muller advertised the qualities of fateful DDT Went to war with the mosquito, ignorant of what would be Unsinkable sailor at the edge of the sea We’re indebted to this pioneer who took on the industry With a belly full of heptachlor, dieldrin in the veins Corporations seem like gods sometimes but it’s us who hold the reins

Well I wouldn’t mind if it was certain But we’re broken in half by doubt each day Still we’re making molehills out of mountains anyway More and more each day I’ve battled hard to be here, long dark winters Freezing fingers, frozen thumbs I’ve followed you for 12 years Like a songbird singing sweetly to the sun Bending over backwards I want you to like me Want you to be wrong The train ride lasts a lifetime, stopping too much Sorrow’s bound to come But the days get shorter without reason Squeeze the water from the shore Loving changes with the seasons But we will change for it no more I struggled to remember the beginning Back then we were both just kids I drove there for an hour just to tell you That I love you, that I care Exams on the horizon, pressure rising Scared that I’ll impair The gritted roads are winding Fog flack blinding, common sense thread bare But the days get shorter without reason Squeeze the water from the shore Loving changes with the seasons But we will change for it no more When the grass is always greener Talking cheaper, loving keener in my mind We’re aiming for a future that will suit us Stand the test of time But the days get shorter without reason Squeeze the water from the shore Loving changes with the seasons But we will change for it no more On the day that you left With the love that you’d kept So dear, so dear On the day that you left me This impossible test It was so clear, so clear

Last night I listened too hard to the pouring rain It drove me insane for you Each time you disappear beyond the northern sky A piece of me dies for you Try not to be distracted by the state of the nation The captive currency We’re tempted by the theories of the red rag papers And the short term promises Two hearts beating in one chest, that fight to stay alive Make us stronger, life last longer or bring it to an end Love is leaving, hope receding, confidence descends After pleading, them conceding, on us it now depends But I’ll miss you, yeah I’ll miss you Be honest now don’t kid yourself you’re the poor relation Some far flung station above Though we share an ocean and the same dark skies It’s time to sever ties Two hearts beating in one chest, that fight to stay alive Make us stronger, life last longer or bring it to an end Love is leaving, hope receding, confidence descends After pleading, them conceding, on us it now depends But I’ll miss you, yeah I’ll miss you

Hell on the waves, can’t see the sky Hell on the waves, can’t see the sky Hold me tight, keep me close In our minds, we are drowned Slave to the sea, merciless beast Slave to the sea, merciless beast Hold me tight, keep me close In our minds, we are drowned Fire in the hole, burn from within Fire in the hole, burn from within Cling to hope, for the burning rope In our minds, we’re going down Well the flames have taken hold, now it’s only time Our grave has been dug, in the ocean’s ancient mud Then a wave came out the night, and it broke across the bow And it smothered all the flames, still she sailed on through the night Don’t leave now, us lucky few We’ll limp on home, until we see dry land
7.
Step outside to a doorstep heaven The day’s alive Take a walk under clouds of feather It ebbs away the changes Well I’ve seen the light, I don’t want to lie Or promise all the things I can’t control With reams of silver, unsullied pearls, and virgin lace Well heads will turn and she will learn to run away She dreams of comets that come from far away Pulled apart by the thought of silence, anaesthetised I’m learning more about this life’s rich pageant Its hollow threats and cages Have captured us in a teary flood I’m forced to hope for things I don’t really love And it’s coming like a train, with red fire and rain Well heads will turn and she will learn to run away She dreams of comets that come from far away She stands beneath the stars tonight She’s tangled in their ancient light Illuminates the lessons of the past She will call her Dad to pick her up As envy swells and tears flood Accepts her luck inevitably changed Well heads will turn and she will learn to run away She dreams of comets that come from far away

This time it’s happening This time it’s real We are listening out for news We’ll be teachers of the night We’ll be learning what is right But it’s all over this old town Got your head on my shoulder Got bad dreams round again It’s here it is all over now We’ll go back to the start where we once began It’s here it is all over now We’ll go back to the start Where we once were children My hope is faltering Her hope is steel We are listening to the words Is it good news or is it bad All this waiting, it drives me mad But it’s all over this old town Got your head on my shoulder Got bad dreams round again It’s here it is all over now We’ll go back to the start where we once began It’s here it is all over now We’ll go back to the start Where we once were children We’re told that she is ready, the time has come We are listening out for tears We’ll be fair and we’ll be fun We’ll be kind when the day is done But it’s all over this old town Got your head on my shoulder Got bad dreams round again It’s here it is all over now We’ll go back to the start where we once began It’s here it is all over now After 9 months of waiting and worrying It’s here it is all over now Are there ten toes and fingers And family that linger And friends who’ll be helpful Who’ll lend us a hand And be glad and rejoiceful with us

Standing on the back of autumn weather Purple heather creeps up on the sky Well she will shout a shepherd’s call Sitting on the fence ‘till all her grief disappears Closing on the heels of winter’s worry Cold heads hurry while they wait for food Sometimes she feels just like a storm, clothes in tatters dressed in scorn Oh Hannah, how I feel for you Well I could see why, that she’d want to Following the Tees to its source Up Baldersdale, past Cotherstone, to the farm Hannah’s in the field all alone with Adder’s tongue Hoping that the sun threads a course through the clouds in the sky above the dale Yearning for the perfect weather, waiting for the snow to gather Battle through the drifts that swallow walls like they don’t matter Picking off the weak The cold will freeze the river dry The firewood’s damp the sky’s alive Don’t think, don’t realise Closing on the heels of winter’s worry Cold heads hurry while they wait for food Sometimes she feels just like a storm, clothes in tatters dressed in scorn Oh Hannah, how I feel for you In the hotel room, it’s not dark enough Well I can still see the crack in the wall that wants to swallow her whole She comes around to watch them sleep, she stands and watches silently But I, know she’s there Closing on the heels of winter’s worry Cold heads hurry while they wait for food Sometimes she feels just like a storm, clothes in tatters dressed in scorn Oh Hannah, how I feel for you Waiting for the snow to gather round us

Sore Eyes 03:39
Hunch my knees up and tell you you’re beautiful Worn like a scar We’re rattling around like a drop in an ocean of sand I’m glad I’m happy but sad I’m not sad So blame it on the timing Through coloured glass Blame it on my ignorance Same apathy, just for you Sore eyes and sore feet Eat away at me on this quiet street I’m soothed by my company But my company’s not mine to sooth I’m sick with hunger but there’s nothing I’d eat So blame it on the timing Through coloured glass Blame it on my ignorance Same apathy, just for you

You and me babe, we’re on the run You and me babe, we’ll have such fun Head due north babe, to the sea Better than a guilty plea Is it true? You and me babe, we’re on the road Lines of concrete show where to go Instincts matter babe, no time to think Silence shattered babe, swim or sink Is it true what they say? Hide your face babe, we’ll slip right through Border’s shut babe, what to do? Come back later in the dead of night We’ll see protection by morning light Is it true what they say? That you’re a faker You’re a thief You’ll meet your maker If you don’t cheat, me Roads are close babe, nowhere to go Found us out babe, no boat to row Down to fumes babe, we’re on our backs Take our chances in waters black

Sweet Dreams 02:28
Sweet dreams my little man It’s been a long, hard day Watching the world, watching spring unfurl Hoping our love will stay Sweet dreams my little one Catch your dreams in a net And stash them away for some rainy day They will stand you in good stead Roll over have another dream You could go where you like Hot or cold, day or night Don’t give your self a fright Sweet dreams my little man You can only do your best Just take each test, don’t forget to rest Your happiness my measure Sweet dreams my little one Some day you will have your own You’ll have to teach to keep in reach The things that really matter Roll over have another dream You could go where you like Hot or cold, day or night Don’t give your self a fright
